Birefringent Crystals

  •  α-BBO (α-BaB2O4) is a negative uniaxial crystal which has large birefringence over a broad transparent range of 190nm to 3500nm. α-BBO is an excellent crystal, suitable for the manufacture of polarizer, polarization beam displacer, time delay compensator plate and other birefringent device, especially for UV and high power applications. The physical, chemical, thermal and optical properties of α-BBO crystal are similar to those of β-BBO. However, the nonlinear optical properties of α-BBO crystal are nonexistent due to the centric symmetry with its crystal structure. α-BBO crystal is not recommended for NLO processes.
  • Calcite is a negative uniaxial crystal that has high birefringence, wide spectral transmission and availability in reasonably sized rhombs. Although is a fairly soft crystal and is easily scratched, it is ideal material used as visible and near IR polarizers, such as Glan Thompson, and Glan Taylor Glan laser.
  • Yttrium Vanadate (YVO4) crystals have good mechanical and physical properties and are ideal for optical polarizing components because of their wide transparency range and large birefringence. They are an excellent synthetic substitute for Calcite (CaCO3) and Rutile (TiO2) in many applications including fiber optic isolators and circulators, beam displacers, Glan polarizers and other polarizing optics.
  • LiNbO3 Crystal is widely used as frequency doublers for wavelength >1μm and optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) pumped at 1064 nm as well as quasi-phase-matched (QPM) devices. Additionally due to its large Electro-Optic(E-O) and Acousto-Optic(A-O) coefficients, LiNbO3 crystal is the most commonly used material for Pockel Cells, Q-switches and phase modulators, waveguide substrate, and surface acoustic wave(SAW) wafers.
  •  Optically, crystalline quartz is used extensively as a wave retardationmedium, using the birefringent properties for use in quarter-wave platesand in polarizers. Quartz is mined naturally, but more commonly produced synthetically in large long faceted crystals. Quartz is positive birefringent.
  • MgF2 single crystal is a birefrigent material with particular properties. It has a high resistance to mechanical and thermal shock and radiation. With wide transparent range and high transmissibility, it becomes a popular choice for UV and excimer laser windows, polarizers, prisms, lenses, wedges, windows, and other optical components.
